Wrinkles are the biggest manifestation of skin aging processes, especially the ones on the face. How are wrinkles formed? The weakening and disappearance of the structure of collagen fibers, reduction of the hydrolipidic coat and repetitive facial movements of the face are of key importance. It is difficult to clearly answer the question when the first wrinkles arise – this is an individual matter.

What are the most common types of wrinkles?

Mimic wrinkles are the result of the continuous work of 54 facial muscles, formed at a right angle to the line of muscle tension. They appear already at a young age and become deeper over the years. The area around the forehead, the corners of the eyes, and the nose and mouth are most exposed to the development of facial wrinkles. Gravitational wrinkles, in turn, are nothing but the effect of passing time and anatomical and functional changes in the skin. Structural wrinkles are a consequence of skin photoaging – excessive exposure to the sun and free radicals effect on the skin.

Forehead wrinkles are one of the least aesthetic and the most noticeable wrinkles. They are usually mimic. They take the form of horizontal lines formed in the upper part of the forehead. Incorrect skin care and genetic predisposition are also contributing factors. In contrast, the lion’s wrinkle is a single furrow or a few furrows located between the eyebrows.

Wrinkles in the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), wrinkles under the eyes, as well as rabbit wrinkles located on the sides of the nose are a common problem. Smoker’s wrinkles are extremely unsightly changes, forming radially around the mouth. Continuous work of the circular mouth muscle, associated with cigarette smoking, deepens the occurence of shallow wrinkles in this location. The name can be misleading – not only smokers are affected by the problem of visible wrinkles around the mouth, although it is certainly much more severe in them. Marionette wrinkles form at the junction of the cheeks and chin, while the nasolabial folds extend from the wings of the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Of course, the face is not the only location of wrinkles – over time neck wrinkles and neckline wrinkles may appear.

Aging of the skin is the resultant of three mechanisms: intrinsic aging, age-related aging and menopausal changes, extrinsic aging (photoaging) and mimic aging.
